In reading the July 10 Herald regarding all those companies claiming to have products that will increase your mileage, I wanted to add my thoughts on the subject.
As a 30-year-plus mechanic in the automotive and now aviation field, as well as a weekly commuter back and forth to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, I have found only one product that will significantly lower your mileage. It is called Liftis Your Footis. In other words, people, slow down.
There is no miracle additive, part or snake oil that will change your mileage like backing off the gas pedal. This, along with keeping your car in a high state of tune and making sure your tires are properly inflated, can make a marked difference. The friction of an under-inflated tire on the road can make a difference in your mileage, however more is not better — over-inflated tires can lead to premature tire wear and a possible blowout, especially on hot days when the heat from the road, combined with high tire pressure, elevates to a point where the tire can blow.
