Leaders can tighten belt just like families

There is nothing as painful as being at the grocery store and telling a child that he can’t have a box of Trix cereal because there isn’t enough money. It’s heartbreaking, but I have to make tough decisions like that every day and with every penny I have.

I recently read a guest commentary in The Herald by the Republicans on the County Council (“County executive embraces hysteria instead of history,” Aug. 29). Essentially, the County Council wants more money so it can continue to spend more tax dollars than taxpayers give them.

To John Koster, Gary Nelson and Jeff Sax I have a message: The county may not have any more of my money. The people I love and I often forego the things we want because there just isn’t enough money. The idea that county government would even consider spending more money than it has is outrageous. If I can find a way to pay the rent and put food on the table with my limited income, so can the county government. I don’t want deficit spending that leads to increased taxes. I want spending to equal tax revenue and if that means county government has to make sacrifices, so be it. The government can tighten its belt just like common, everyday people do all the time.
