In response to Margaret Sullivan’s concern and critique of the Democratic presidential debates, the solution is simple. Return the process to the League of Women Voters or some equally nonpartisan organization. They can establish ground rules. The rules Sullivan proposes are sound and would help establish decorum.
The media companies can still broadcast the debates and have panelists. If they are willing to do so absent commercial interruption and include subject matter experts.
We need to get past the reality show “got you” and sound bite spectacle we currently have. We must return to a substantial discussion of issues, policies and ideas.
