As a dog owner and avid hiker, I was very disturbed to read about Heidi Johnston’s incident involving her dog Dimples who was caught in a steel-jawed leghold trap in northeast Snohomish County (“The flap over traps,” news story, Oct. 15). These traps have no place in Washington state.
I strongly support Initiative 713, which would ban cruel and indiscriminate body-gripping traps for commerce and recreation in fur – traps like the one that injured Dimples. This reasonable measure will protect wild animals from being killed for fur and protect dogs like Dimples from terrible agony and suffering in traps.
I will be voting for I-713, as will many other pet owners in Washington.
