In Thursday’s letters to the editor, one writer makes the claim that Ronald Reagan’s legacy has been “reshaped” by his fans. This is somewhat true of all presidents after they’ve left office.
Where I take exception is his statement that unemployment was a whopping 10 percent in 1982. (Reagan had been in office all of 12 months by that time.) What the writer omitted was that the unemployment rate dropped drastically from the actual number of 9.7 percent in 1982 to 5.5 percent at the end of his presidency in 1988. His omission of that fact is in itself “reshaping the legacy” to fit his political point of view. Apparently, the trickle down economic “theory” he is grousing about worked.
