I am disappointed that the Legislature once again overturned a popular and important citizen initiative. In 2000, citizens statewide voted overwhelmingly – 55 percent! – to ban animal traps that were devastating wildlife populations.
Many fur-bearing animals, such as lynx and fisher, have been driven to the brink of extinction by trapping in our forests. The voters recognized that and said “No more traps.”
Unfortunately, the Legislature didn’t listen to the citizens, but to a very small special-interest group – the trappers – and ignored our clear interest in our wildlife heritage.
What part of “no more traps” didn’t they understand? It seems that citizens will have to run this initiative one more time.
