Currently our nation is feeling a great resurgence of patriotism and is acknowledging God, under whom we stand as one nation. Everywhere I see the slogan, “God bless America.” Is this a plea or a demand?
God has blessed America with our rich resources, in our Constitution (which I truly believe was divinely inspired), in the wisdom of our leaders and citizens, past and present. Do we thank Him for the blessings we all enjoy or merely ask for more?
I would suggest that the tragic events of Sept. 11 might best be used as a wake-up call:
n A call to repentance of the anger that has been so prevalent in America, manifested in domestic violence, in frivolous lawsuits, in road rage and in verbal abuse everywhere.
n A call to repenting of greed that causes us: to ignore, even belittle, the poor among us; to be sparing in our gifts to charity; to give only with an eye to tax deductions; and to cause undue damage to the environment, instead of using our resources frugally.
n A call to repent of the pride that is prevalent wherein we are not thanking God in all things and, instead, are flaunting our educations, our lifestyles and our wealth.
If we would repent of these things and instead practice humility and charity, we would, indeed, have brotherhood from sea to shining sea, we would stand one nation, indivisible, there would be liberty and justice for all and we would be deserving of having God bless America.
