Regarding the Saturday article, “Obama talks candidly of his faith”:
I recall something naturalist John Burroughs once asked, “Why kick the old theology after it is dead?” Maybe not kick it, but let’s give it a nudge.
I weary of the same old, “my God’s bigger and better” spin – the true blue (and red) American political religion that seems to sell (and buy votes). Of course, another recent political figure of another party still claims to be led by his awesome God as well. No surprise, he now rules us. I suppose since he stands on his own “sacred principles” we must accept that his God – Obama’s “awesome” one – simply loves a good war now and then, especially against those nasty heathen Muslims.
Well maybe, just maybe, the country (and the world) are ready for another Jefferson or his common sense friend Thomas Paine, who both saw the need for a Second Revolution. Only this time it would be a war of independence from the tyranny of the irrational My-God-is-Best religion.
