In light of so many municipalities installing red light cameras, it is time for some uniform regulations to assure they are used for their stated purpose of traffic safety, instead of their present use for purely “revenue production.”
It’s a proven fact that most of them have a shortened yellow light time — to increase revenue production — and an increase in the incidents of collision. The collisions are rear-enders because so many people instinctively slam on the brakes at the first sight of a yellow to keep from getting ticketed. Most of them, it is so short that you have no choice but to get a ticket or get rearended if you are being tailgated.
There needs to be regulations requiring an ample amount of time for every 5 mph to get stopped and clear the intersection. And don’t forget heavy commercial vehicles and vehicles with trailers. Safety first, revenue second.
