It was disturbing to read some of the claims in Kerri Lonergan’s letter of Aug. 6. It seems the Jeff Sax supporters are continuing to spread the same kind of misinformation that got him elected to replace Dave Somers four years ago.
Claim: Sewer treatment plant built on seismic fault line. I assume the writer was referring to Brightwater.
Fact: The Snohomish County Council had no say in the siting of that plant.
Claim: Ascent 21 proposed to raise our taxes.
Fact: The council, under Somers, did approve Ascent 21 to be put to a vote of the people. Isn’t that what we want? What’s wrong with letting voters decide where their tax dollars go?
Claim: Sitting on millions of dollars in mitigation money that was supposed to be used to build parks and roads near new development.
Fact: The $20 million that Sax claimed the county was “sitting” on had been allocated to projects in the works. No one was “sitting” on it. In fact, the road improvements seen in the last four years, such as the 132nd Street extension and the East Hewitt expansion, were begun under the previous council using that money.
Somers has the knowledge and experience that the County Council needs. He also understands the connection between federal, state and local laws that govern the decisions the council makes. Let’s return Somers to the council and return to the days when citizens were treated with respect and when we had a council member who would work for all of the people.
