The recent letter by Scott Eiler precisely illustrates Marysville’s problem with drug use. (“Why should we care about addicts?”) Our small town mentality has led us down a road of apathy and neglect which devalues citizens and allows people to just wash their hands and turn away. His solution puts devalued citizens at mortal risk. Why not just round up all the dopers and truck ‘em to the crematorium? Sure would be cheaper than rehab programs and transition housing programs that do not always work, but they do work. How about our homeless? Everyone knows they are a scourge and are dopers and thieves anyway. Let’s get rid of them, too! Oh, and how about the junk and blight in Marysville neighborhoods that attracts crime? Maybe we should get rid of those folks too because they are a big part of the problem. See where this is going? Frightening!
The solution is easy to understand but hard to do. We must work to convince people who have been devalued their entire lives that they are worth more, not worthless. They are worth more than the junk they collect. They are worth more than the drugs they use. They are worth more than the stuff they steal. Hold them accountable, absolutely! Devalue them further? And just do more of what causes the problem in the first place? Think people!
