Letter: Miss Washingon should apologize for answer on flag

Washingtonians should be united in celebrating the third place finish of our own Miss Alicia Cooper in the recent Miss America 2017 pageant. Sadly, our current holder of the Miss Washington title chose to embarrass and divide rather than unite and uplift our state.

When asked a question regarding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest during the national anthem; rather than standing up for our national anthem and the brave men and women of our police and armed forces, Miss Cooper/Miss Washington chose to stand with the Black Lives Matter organization and individuals such as Mr. Kaepernick who are working to undermine our nation.

Perhaps as an afterthought of her statement, Miss Cooper did assure the audience “all lives matter,” yet, when given the opportunity to stand with law enforcement and those loyal to our nation, Miss Washington failed to do her duty.

As a citizen of our beloved state of Washington, I call upon Miss Cooper to apologize to our state and local law enforcement for the great apparent disregard for their contribution to our state and the general welfare of its people. … Thankfully for her, regardless of her disregard for their lives; they will continue to protect hers.
