Ahem. I have a quibble with a point made in the letter, “Wyman late to ‘prepaid’ ballot.” It’s likely the postage currently required is, or could be, deemed a form of poll-tax (though, if so, must be the teensiest, weensiest such tax ever levied). Thus, I agree, mailing a ballot should not, logically, require postage.
Back to my quibble, specifically the sentence: “Postage-free ballots are a critical step forward to ensure every voter has equal access to casting their ballot.” Wow! Am I to believe the cost of postage actually prevents some people from voting? That, during the long stretch between general elections, there’s little likelihood they’ll have had an opportunity to scrounge up (and safely store in a pickle jar) the three or four quarters they’ll need for a couple of stamps? Sorry, I’m not buying it. Either (A) The postage requirement is a real obstacle to voting because some voters are terrible at planning ahead, or, (B) The postage requirement is not a real obstacle to voting (but should be eliminated). I’m going with B.
