We were marking our ballots and were about to vote for the increase in sales tax when we noted the story about the obscene pay increases for county employees. If the county can afford 19 percent pay raises (or even 5 percent for some), it doesn’t need our increased sales tax contribution. For perspective, our Social Security pensions increased 1.4 percent in 2014, 1.7 percent in 2015 and for 2016 the Social Security Administration announced that since there was no increase in consumer prices, there d be no cost of living increase this year. (Did the county executive’s cost of living increase more than ours?)
