The growing flap over sitting during the national anthem is based on something that ought to be changed; that is, playing a national anthem at every major sporting event (and even “America the Beautiful” during some events). Why? Are we Americans so thin-skinned about our identity that we need to proclaim patriotism everywhere? Does anyone really think those attending and playing don’t understand “freedom” (not to mention the coattails capitalist team owners are using to grow their sports) allows all this sporting activity, and honoring the flag isn’t necessary?
I am reading messages in media that some even burn athletic wear if any team “offends.” Recent discussion has shown, curiously and comically, that it’s likely that 99.9 percent of us sit at home when we watch any sport game when the anthem is played. Further, how many other civic and entertainment events occur with no anthem and seem to proceed quite well. I am a decorated Vietnam-era vet and see no reason at all for this practice. “Play ball” (or similar encouragements) ought to start events, not a demand to evidence patriotism. What are we afraid of, anyway?
