The article “Auditor supports ID law” contained this quote from Shankar Narayan, a director in the ACLU in this state: “There is no credible evidence of non-citizens voting in Washington.” This statement would be much more comforting if we could verify that a person who votes here is actually qualified to vote.
Tina Podlodowski, who is cited in the article, is apparently unconcerned with our lax system of voter verification, and accuses Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman of “intentionally inflaming anti-immigrant sentiments.” Well, when you don’t have any other cards to play, the race card is always a useful distraction.
Why is it controversial to insist that only Washington residents who are U.S. citizens should be able to vote? Our right to vote is precious; when noncitizens are permitted to vote, the votes of legal voters are diluted. One has to question the motives of anyone who is unwilling to safeguard this precious right.
