The generosity of the church garden in Snohomish teaches many lessons and creates joy for many. (“Churches abundant vegetable garden feeds a community,” Aug. 20 article by Kari Bray.) In addition to learning about the miracle of growing food for children and people of all ages, it brings up the the fact that the food bank needs its donations.
Why do we need food banks? The billboard by the Snohomish roundabout says 1 in 6 Americans are hungry, for children it is 1 in 5. What about food stamps? This program, SNAP, is not fully funded and currently is in danger of cuts. In the spirit of the community garden, we can do something to end hunger in America. Call or write your congressional representatives and ask them to fully fund the food stamp program and then get at hunger’s root causes. We can end hunger in America if we work together, another lesson from the church garden.
