Letter: Trump just latest in long line of GOP influences

All of a sudden Republicans are worried about the “Trump Factor,” as if the long-running decision-making process that brought them to this point wasn’t deliberate. The decision to adopt the “Southern Strategy” during the Nixon administration linked them firmly to southern racists. Embracing the Pat Robertson evangelicals was part of that as well.

When the U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, Republicans were, and still are, all in with any and all measures to block women’s constitutional right to make decisions about their own bodies. That some of their most radical believers committed attacks, including bombings and even murders, was an inevitable part of the strategy.

Second Amendment mania and Republicans supporting militias and other anti-government groups, including the Bundy family actions in Nevada and Oregon, demonstrates an actual lack of regard for the law. This includes the public lands issue in the west.

The tea party was deliberate, though it got out of hand and led to a House Republican Caucus that “wagged the dog.”

All this and more has brought us to the point where our American Democracy may actually be in peril!
