Occasionally, a letter to the editor must be rebutted, I feel. I refer to the Feb. 17 letter written by Mr. Paul Blowers of Arlington (“Party’s rule has gone on long enough”).
Claiming to be an independent voter, Mr. Blowers decries the control of politics in our state by the Democratic Party, and blames it for practically everything that ails us.
It has been my observation that truly independent voters don’t usually blame any particular party for our troubles, or give credit exclusively to any party for success. It usually takes bipartisan effort to make progress on any important issue.
Mr. Blowers blames Democrats for our sad traffic situation, for instance, apparently unaware of the rapid growth in this area and the unique geographic problems this area presents to traffic planners. Unless, of course, he blames Democrats for these things as well.
He also feels that teacher pay is inadequate, as does most everybody, and lays the blame for that at the Democrats’ feet – in spite of the fact, as he notes, that the teachers’ union is one of the biggest contributors to the Democratic campaign coffers. Does that make sense?
Another large donor to the party, he says, are those dreaded environmentalists, whose support of the Growth Management Act is largely responsible for high housing costs. I say look around you, Mr. Blowers, does it appear to you that the GMA has even slowed growth in Arlington? Or in Snohomish County?
Another group that donates large sums to the Democrats, he reveals, are wealthy people. Mr. Blowers, wealthy people donate large sums to all political parties. Even more so to Republican coffers than to Democrats.
You don’t sound like an independent voter to me, Mr. Blowers, nor do you look like one. Probably because it’s so hard to disguise large floppy ears and a long trunk.
