Simply amazing is the kindest spin I can put on the Wednesday letter claiming the president was given a free pass by the press before his election. This gentleman must have been out of the country in which I live, since the scrutiny not only occurred via the press but by every Republican organization that could hire an investigator. It has continued post-election as well.
The message in this view is that our president is the problem. If so, is he also the reason the Republican-led House of Representatives has done less work than any House in history? Is he the reason that conservative ideologues who can’t negotiate their way out of a paper bag now represent Americans who by majorities in the polls are rather sick of their posturing and want to see the leadership they promised when they received what they call “a mandate?” It wasn’t a mandate to gridlock.
I listen to both sides, and what the president proposes — that the rich actually pay taxes, which historically they did at significantly higher rates even under Republican Presidents — seems to upset non-rich average Americans, especially those who are conservative. What the press needs to vet is, “What are you rank and file conservatives thinking? Have you been brainwashed into thinking the rich are creating jobs? Are you paying attention at all? Did you read The Herald front page headline, ‘County jobless rate at 10.1 percent’?” What is not being vetted is why the rich are banking billions and are AWOL on the American economy, and why letter writers like this think President Obama is the problem.
