I have just finished rereading the Opinion page of your Sunday edition and I would like to thank two of your letter writers, because they further enforced my opinion that innumerable drivers think that they must drive the posted speed limit regardless of road or traffic conditions, or drive in any lane when they have a trailer in tow and at the posted speed for single vehicles even though towing a trailer requires twice as much attention.
Then to condemn Trooper Lance Ramsey for his comment regarding people needing to improve their driving. I am sure that Trooper Ramsey has seen the best and worst of drivers, and, in the course of his duties, has visited more accident sites than these two writers combined. In my opinion these two writers owe Trooper Ramsey an apology for their comments.
As to their questioning the use of the cable barrier versus a concrete median barrier. Before a person condemns an existing installation, they should become familiar with the reasons a particular solution was used. No one can anticipate all of the possible ways an installation may be put through and therefore must rely on statistical data to determine which solution to use and the comparable costs of each.
No one, Department of Transportation employees, the Washington State Patrol, or anyone else wants to see a fatality on our highways, and to infer that body count will determine change is an insult to the people who design the highways and those charged with enforcement of our traffic laws.
