A Sept. 12 letter to the editor, urged us to embrace news of Americanism. He celebrated recent, heroic volunteerism by Americans. He went on to reinforce this celebration of Americanism by referring to some Americans as “human waste.” The writer made a trenchant point, but I doubt it was the one he intended. It is a sad time when Americans refer to other Americans as “human waste.”
