I am puzzled by the Jan. 23 letter from Jackie and Mark Swyer (“Future of valley hangs in the balance”) suggesting that we don’t need KRKO’s improved radio signal in Snohomish County because Seattle-based “KIRO 710 is just fine.” If Seattle programming is such a great substitute for local media, why did the Swyers decide to publish their letter in The Herald versus the Seattle Times or Seattle P-I?
Perhaps even the Swyers, like the rest of us, recognize how much local media supports our shared enthusiasm for “speaking Snohomish.” People here love to talk about Snohomish County. We gripe about traffic on the trestle, groan about Boeing layoffs or cheer the homecoming of Navy ships. We also debate, cajole and influence views about local affairs, from Mountlake Terrace to Arlington – all on the pages of The Herald and on the airwaves of KRKO. With Seattle media, we just can’t do that.
I hope the Snohomish County Council approves KRKO’s antennas. After all, the vitality of any community rests on the strength of its local media. If anyone doubts this fact, just look where KRKO’s opponents are sending all their letters – to our local newspaper, of course!
