Letter: Wrong to balance county budget with cuts to sheriff’s office

Reading the Oct. 5 article about cutting $2.4 million from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s budget makes me wonder. Balancing the budget with our jail and police enforcement is the wrong thing to do; it doesn’t fix anything and will only open another drain elsewhere that we can’t afford. As it is now, any victim is almost required to file a request for help or complaint online with often no response at all. Then many wonder why more people have guns. Self-policing may be the answer: more reliable, immediate, and more effective?
