I read your Oct. 12 article, “Medical clinics gathering support for initiative” and as a doctor I want to express my support for Initiative 330. Washington’s health-care system is collapsing under the weight of exorbitant jury awards. All across the state, employers, small businesses, hospitals, doctors and patients are being pushed to the breaking point. Something must be done.
Under the current system, premiums are rising to unacceptable levels. Many physicians can’t find or afford liability insurance. Since 1998, the Washington State Medical Association has reported a 31 percent increase in doctors moving out of the state. Fewer doctors mean less access for patients and unreliable access to health care is unacceptable.
Local clinics understand this is a real threat to patient care and are working hard to help drive a sensible solution. Medical liability insurance reform is desperately needed to maintain quality health care for our community.
