Regarding the article, “Everett’s first budget proposals just the start of work:” Those of us signing this letter have three things in common — we are over 80, we love to read, especially now that we are unable to participate in some of our “former activities,” and we are able to drive to the library. We are lucky to still be independent. Many other older people are not so fortunate, such as those in nursing homes and retirement centers. The highlight of their month is the arrival of the Library Van. Reaching out to these people is a wonderful service as is the service to disadvantaged pre-schoolers. And the library does both these outreach services so well at minimal cost.
Everyone has his or her pet project. But these outreach programs are a drop in the bucket expense-wise, while some of the other services and salary/benefit costs create a huge hole in the budget. We hope you will keep these programs, so cost effective and important to our community.
