Local leaders can offer suggestions

Doug Roulstone’s Monday guest commentary on “energy independence” was actually kinda cute. This man who wanted to be my congressman two years ago has just discovered “those strange-looking compact fluorescent lights,” and already wants to lead a movement! Great idea, Doug! We could print up T-shirts and hold meetings!

I was particularly impressed that his house only used “11 kilowatts of energy” in a week. Wow, Doug! We need your incredibly energy efficient house on next year’s Solar Tour!

Seriously, though, if you want a guest commentary on energy, there are any number of people you might ask. You could start with PUD Commissioner David Aldrich, who has been preaching and teaching conservation for years, not to mention working on it from a policy perspective.

In fact, the PUD would be a great place for Doug’s new movement to take its first field trip! They have a host of great conservation ideas right on their Web site, and could give you a coupon to save money on “those strange-looking compact fluorescent lights.”

Fortunately, Doug gave us his e-mail address so we could share any “better ideas for saving energy around the house.” I think I’ll offer a few. Maybe others will as well.

(But don’t tell him that his household energy usage will be measured in kilowatt hours, not kilowatts, or that his refrigerator pulls more than 11 in a week all by itself. It might burst his bubble.)
