I was glad to see Governor Gary Locke’s public promise that “…the most vulnerable people in state care will be protected” as he responded to the impact of state revenue losses in the Nov. 21 article, “Shortfall slams state’s budget.”
Obviously, a large part of those vulnerable people reside in our nursing homes and other long term care settings around Washington state. I applaud the governor for taking a stand for these people who require 24-hour care in a system the Legislature is now paying private providers grossly inadequate amounts to begin with.
DSHS states its proposed cuts would “result in facility closures” that would dislocate residents and that providers would be forced to “incur care problems.”
Thank you, Gov. Locke for standing up for the generation who won World War II and those of us who care for them.
