Logic behind cuts to Planned Parenthood mystifying

Republicans want to defund Planned Parenthood because they offer abortions. Planned Parenthood reportedly spends only 3 percent of their money on this, and they say no taxpayer money goes directly to abortions. Republican logic says taxpayer dollars fund basic operations at Planned Parenthood, which frees up money to fund abortions. Therefore, they argue, taxpayer dollars pay for abortions and all taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood should end.

The U.S. sends billions of taxpayer dollars to Israel for defense purposes; one might even say “billions and billions and billions of dollars.” Using Republican logic, U.S. taxpayer dollars sent to Israel free up their own funds that would otherwise go to defense. Those freed-up funds pay for universal health care for every citizen of Israel (some of whom, I assume, are able-bodied). Therefore, one can argue, U.S. taxpayer dollars pay for Israel’s universal health care.

How can we send U.S. taxpayer dollars to a foreign country to fund universal health care for their able-bodied citizens, but we can’t do the same for our own here at home?

Sad.
