Lots of stuff we can mandate

I have to respond to the Thursday letter, “Required coverage ensures basic right”:

The writer uses all the progressive reasons that The Government should have the right to order American citizens, just because these people exist, to buy healthcare insurance.

The government

is not only going to require a purchase, but will regulate exactly what is purchased, and what is included in that purchase. The writer and other liberal/progressives say this is good because it is good for the country. She must not have read the Constitution. This authority is not there. The Constitution is approximately 16 pages long and defines the power of the federal government and specifically states in the 10th amendment that if a power is not specifically listed, that power is limited to the people or to the states.

Liberals/progressives hate the Constitution because it gets in the way of the total control of our lives by their beloved central government. They ridicule and demean people who want to keep our government within it’s constitutional boundaries as stupid kooks.

If the federal government could order citizens to make purchases for the good of the country, let’s require all citizens to purchase and eat broccoli. Of course the government could prohibit cheese on that food. Bad for the collective health, you know! This would definitely be good for the country. Since the government and the American public is a large stake-holder in GM, let’s require all citizens to buy a Cadillac Escalade. Good for the Taxpayers. Let’s also require the Caddies be hybrids. Good for the environment, you know! In closing, they use auto insurance as an example. My mother never in her life had auto insurance. She never owned a car and never learned to drive.
