I would like to thank John Lovick for his commentary about the killing of George Floyd (“What 526 horrible seconds of video brought to mind,” The Herald, June 17). As a student of history, and a teacher of history, I know his memories of growing up in the South were heartbreaking, accurate and shared by millions of other Black Americans.
There are people who would like the return of a segregated America. I am proud to live in a community where thousands of people of all colors have the courage to stand up and say Black Lives Matter.
The phrase does not minimize the value of all life. It just says that we refuse to return to a shameful time where black lives did not matter.
I would also like to thank John Lovick for his life of service. His service through the military, law enforcement and elected office has served us all. And he has served us all well.
