We are writing to support the Snohomish PUD Education Department. Many of us at Machias Elementary School have benefited from the classroom visits, school assemblies, teacher workshops and support that the PUD Education Department provides.
Education staff members at the PUD are always willing to come to Machias for classroom visits. During these visits, the instructors guide our students through inquiry-based lessons on electrical circuits, electrical safety, energy conservation, energy resources, water cycle, water quality and conservation and other concepts. This resource is valuable to Machias teachers to supplement our science curriculum with inquiry-based experiences that give our students an awareness of safety issues and foster an appreciation for sound ecological practices in our community.
The teacher workshops provided by the PUD are excellent. Instructors are always well-prepared for quality workshops which include speakers from the scientific community, field experiences, and valuable information and lessons teachers can utilize in the classroom. Salmon, solar energy, water conservation and water quality, watersheds, and the inquiry method are just some of the topics covered in the teacher workshops provided by the Snohomish PUD Education Department. After attending these workshops, teachers also appreciate the staff’s continued support when teaching new lessons in their classrooms.
Machias Elementary School was fortunate to have the Banana Slug String Band perform a free school-wide assembly last spring. This performance was arranged through the PUD Education Department. The students were excited to learn about the water cycle, protection of watersheds, conservation and other environmental topics from a professional group of performers dedicated to educating children. The group even donated one of their compact discs to our school library for teachers to use as a resource. This worthwhile learning experience was positively received and greatly appreciated.
I, and many co-signing staff members, are thankful for the PUD’s continued support of educators and students through this tough financial period. The PUD education department is a valuable resource to our school community.
