What is it with our state government and public votes? It seems that initiatives, or anything passed at the polls that isn’t liked by some, ends up being overthrown by a court.
In a democracy this is how it works – very simply – majority rules. Nowhere does it say the will of the courts or minority rules. By undermining the voting process, the courts not only do a disservice but cheapen the only way Americans have to make government listen to them. This hurts us all in the end, as folks stop voting out of fear that it is a waste of time. If we want to give total power to government, the continued overthrow of public votes is a step in that direction.
Regardless of the issue, votes must be respected. We all must remember the first three words of the most powerful document in our nation: We the people.
