Initiative 594 backers sure make convincing ads, with unlimited funds from wealthy Americans who have their own agenda. I see them every morning, when I am getting ready for work. Two smartly dressed men telling each other how I-594 won’t stop all crime but will sure help to save the police officer on duty. Or the crying young lady who explains that she would still have her loved one, only if I-594 would have been in place. Boy, actors can really get a point across. They really pull at your heart strings.
Or at least they are real good at convincing people who never bother to look into anything for themselves. If someone takes the time to look into Washington’s RCW 9.41 concerning firearms and dangerous weapons, they will see that there are laws; I believe it has 50 sections, already in place concerning use of all firearms. Criminals are already banned from owning or using firearms. What is it people don’t understand about the saying, “Criminals don’t bother to follow the laws because they are criminals.” Eighteen more pages of I-594 are not going to do anything to help stop any crime, but everything to complicate law abiding ownership of firearms.
Ask yourself, why do the Washington Council of Police and Sheriff’s oppose I-594? Because they know that this bill will do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. You don’t see the paid ads telling you this.
I realize that there are people who just don’t want anyone in this country to own firearms. They have the money so they usually get their way. The average, law-abiding citizen taxpayer, on the other hand, must plug along, trying to inform whoever we can that all the laws that are needed already exist. For example, there is no gun show loophole. Please do your research and make an informed decision. Then vote no on I-594, and yes on I-591 to strengthen our already existing laws.
