I was one of the volunteer, unpaid signature gatherers for I-912, the No New Gas Tax initiative, and filled over 13 pages with signatures. Filling these initiative forms was easy and I often had two or three people waiting in line to sign. Several people said that they had already signed and asked if they could sign again. For a while I replied, “Only if you’re a King County Democrat.” Often as not I was told, “But I am a Democrat.” After a few of these, I stopped making the “joke.”
I feel that this initiative was as much a strike against Gov. Christine Gregoire and the arrogance of the Democrats as it was against the tax itself. In her campaign, Gregoire promised no new taxes and that she would “blow past the bureaucracy” to get Washington moving again. Not only did she keep and give pay raises to the bureaucracy, we got a myriad of new taxes and fees.
Will Washingtonians ever learn that when you go to bed with Democrats you awake to find your wallet missing?
