It was such a delight to open our Sept. 4 paper and see the story of Stumpy the squirrel’s return prominently displayed on your front page (“Squirrel’s a survivor”). My husband and I remarked that it wasn’t the first time you’ve devoted front-page space to heart-warming stories about people or animals. It took another reader’s bitterly critical letter to remind me that I’d intended to write to tell you how much we appreciate this policy of offering an occasional off-set to the usual breakfast-time diet of violence, disaster and political acrimony.
We create our world through our perceptions of it. It would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge its wrongs and do what we can to help right them. But today, perhaps more than ever, we need these reminders of the kindness and compassion that also prevails, and the opportunity such coverage gives us to touch upon those feelings in ourselves. Thank you!
