Let me assure letter writer Brandy Bollen that she is not the only one against a Wal-Mart at Smokey Point (“Wal-Mart: Smokey Point area would never be the same,” Tuesday).
I, too, live near Smokey Point and feel a Wal-Mart at that location would be devastating to the surrounding community. Ms. Bollen makes a very legitimate point regarding the traffic. Anyone who drives through the Smokey Point intersection to get to the freeway or the various businesses in the area can attest to varying levels of frustration trying to navigate this area, especially later in the day. Pay attention to the parking lot at the Wal-Mart on the Tulalip Reservation. Now imagine that volume of traffic adding to the congestion already occurring at Smokey Point.
Like Ms. Bollen, I have several reasons why I do not support or patronize Wal-Mart. I don’t believe in driving out businesses that have been around for several years in order to save a few dollars at an impersonal mega-store. Those of us in the community should take note of the fight Stanwood residents are currently engaged in to try to keep Wal-Mart out of their community.
Many communities have regretted Wal-Mart moving into their area. Let’s not let Smokey Point be one of those areas.
