I am writing not as a parent or teacher but the wife of an unemployed former Boeing worker. When my husband was laid off two years ago he went back to school at the age of 54. His class was full of mature adults wanting to work and make a difference in students’ education. After he finished his student teaching and received his masters and teaching certificate last spring he substituted practically every day at various schools until the school year ended. He received many letters and comments from children, parents and his mentor on his excellent endeavors with the students.
In the past two months he has applied for at least 80 different posted openings at various school districts and is still unemployed. Many of the people who graduated in his program are still unemployed.
It is the school district’s and the government’s job to do what we pay our taxes for them to do, teach the children. I feel there are plenty of unemployed people to fill those jobs and the district should get on with their job and replace those striking workers!
