This is in response to Linda Finlayson’s May 19 letter. I am not a big fan of the virtual porn or any other kind. I didn’t want and don’t want my kids as well as all other children looking at that junk. She brings up several very interesting questions that really need to be answered.
1. Why do we make it easy for those who profit by the porn industry? Answer – they call it free enterprise, one of the major concepts of a free nation.
2. Why are they granted any right or privileges? Answer – it’s called the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Primarily the First Amendment (freedom of speech) How would she feel if she weren’t able to say what she thought and weren’t able to have it printed in the paper as she did?
3. What about my rights? Answer – she has the same rights. She and her children can choose not to look at it.
As for paying taxes that allow dirty old men to view porn on the Internet, I would like to refer back to answer No. 2 (First Amendment – freedom of speech). As for having the public voting on it, does she really think she would get a consensus, one way or the other? I’m sure at least half of the people in this country still believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I know I do.
Big money and dirty old men have the same Constitution and Bill of Rights to protect them as we do and they have to play by the same laws.
About half of the owners of those porn Internet sites are dirty old women! It’s an equal opportunity profit maker.
