Even though I’ve lived in Everett for more than six years, Aug. 28 was the first time I’d ever been to one of the free summer concerts sponsored by the city of Everett. I had a great time at the marina; the band was energetic and many people were dancing and enjoying the food and refreshments offered nearby.
During the concert, the band took time to thank the city of Everett for sponsoring the event. I would like to thank the city, too. I know that Everett is facing some financial difficulties, but I hope these types of activities continue well into our future.
I couldn’t help thinking of the other activities and programs in Everett that I have enjoyed: Fourth of July activities, Sorticulture, the downtown sculptures, the Monte Cristo Awards, and the many parks and its recreational events. Personally, I love the flowers that are planted downtown, at Grand Park and along the road by Forest Park.
These types of activities and events are very important to the city and its citizens. They all foster civic pride and civic engagement. They get people out of their homes and engaged in their communities. And in turn, engaged and proud communities lower crime rates and economically bolster local businesses. In other words, they are worth much, much more than their dollar amounts. I hope the city realizes how important these investments are and continue to support and sponsor them.
