May Sen. McCain always serve as an example for officials

As a veteran, I am compelled to recognize and commend the six decades of service by Sen. John McCain.

The senator placed our countrys’ interest first and foremost. He often stated that he was imperfect, a strong indicator of integrity. He is one of the greatest heroes since the founding of our country.

The savage cruelty perpetrated against him at the “Hanoi Hilton,” came close to killing him. In the end it made him a more dedicated servant to the country. The senator had an abiding faith in democracy here and around the world and had the ability to forgive. This speaks volumes about character.

The facts involving his life substantiate that Sen. McCain is indeed a true patriot and hero. He spoke out against tribalism, divisiveness and failure to place country first. He was speaking to Congress, particularly members of his Republican party and the current administration. He called for a return to regular order, for members to recognize the humanity of the opposition and to work in a bipartisan effort.

I feel and fear, unfortunately, that once funeral services are over, the Republicans in the Congress will continue to fail to uphold; their constitutional duties, the rule of law, to place country first above party and to put what is best for the country first. This is destructive and has very serious ramifications for our democracy and others around the world. I believe that history will reflect their inaction the result of a faustian bargain.

Your country needs you now, as much as anytime in our history.

My condolences to the McCain family, loved ones and friends who will miss him dearly. I pray that the Good Lord will keep them safe in the palm of His hand.

Farewell and God speed John McCain, we love you.
