There has certainly been major press coverage regarding Mike McGavick’s forthright disclosure about his DUI arrest 13 years ago. Along with his statement, Mike has also repeatedly stated that he is not proud of his poor choice to drink and drive. Nevertheless, he was willing to tell the public about his mistake, knowing he would, without a doubt, be unmercifully judged. I commend Mike for his candor and courage.
Who among us has never made a poor choice that could have, or may have, altered the course of their life? One-time errors do not disqualify people from being good leaders. On the contrary, the best leaders are often those who have learned from their mistakes and have more compassion for others as a result.
Mike’s disclosure demonstrates that he is really serious about running an open campaign. Unlike his opponent, Mike’s “Open Mike” tours have provided the venue for the good folks of this state to learn who Mike is and where he stands on the important issues of immigration, health care, the war on terror, fiscal responsibility and the environment.
Maria Cantwell has declined multiple invitations from Mike to debate these important issues. I am one citizen who wants to know how my elected representatives will vote on issues we all know we have to deal with if we want our children, grandchildren and future generations to enjoy the freedom, peace and prosperity that we have. Mike will get my vote for Washington’s next U.S. senator.
