Media attention raises awareness

The Granite Falls Community Coalition is pleased the recent national media attention (Rolling Stone Magazine article, Jan. 23 issue, “Crystal Meth: America’s Home-Cooked Death Trap – Plaque in the Heartland”) and local media shows have raised awareness on the drug issues facing our local communities, counties and state.

Rolling Stone quotes Will Glasby of the Drug Enforcement Agency as saying, “Meth is the No.1 threat to rural America. If you look at a map, it’s like a tidal wave moving east from California and the Northwest states.” Rolling Stone writer Paul Solotaroff states, “Meth – cheap, potent and insuperably addictive – is everywhere in the Pacific Northwest, and coming soon to a town near you.”

The Granite Falls Coalition requests everyone read and listen to information carefully – yes, this is a problem in Granite Falls but it is also a problem all over the Pacific Northwest (and beyond). The coalition encourages everyone in their local communities to do research, talk with your local law enforcement officials and work toward solutions.

The Granite Falls Coalition welcomes the opportunity to take advantage of the “spotlight” and encourages all local communities to step up and acknowledge drug problems. Grass-root efforts are instrumental to combat meth distribution and use. The Granite Falls Coalition has been actively providing education for our community for the past year-and-a-half and is proud to set the example for other communities to work together in proactive, positive ways to fight against drug use.

Granite Falls is one of a handful of local communities in the area that is doing something to address the drug problem and say “not in our town.”
