It troubles me when a person acts in such a way as is not acceptable while others cheer since it may be for the “greater good” or “political expediency.” These people are very short-sighted and lack the ability to think through natural consequences.
Case in point, our president is changing a law, approved by Congress — by questionable caveat. The part of the law as written is very clear on when a certain aspect of the Affordable Care Act must be implemented and enforced, its not at all ambiguous or discretionary.
Many smart lawyers and professors admit his actions are not legally supportable, yet neither the media nor many of his political allies seem to consider this action in a honest sense. You don’t see many news agencies pressing this point with the amount of diligence and passion that they did for many other “acts” by past presidents. Is it apathy or ignorance?
I feel it’s political alliance and that is a dangerous precedent. The next president may be from the opposite party, much to their dismay, and may do things that are of the very same precedent. My gut feeling tells me their reaction will be much, much different.
Therein lays the danger of accepting things that are plainly wrong and out of alignment with our principles and values as a nation. We are right now setting ourselves up to allow political expediency to trump logic and due process as outlined in our Constitution.
You can cheer that on when it goes your way, but you had better cheer it on when it doesn’t or else you will earn the title of hypocrite.
