Lou’s cap isn’t the only innocent victim of the M’s season (Larry Henry column, Sept. 20 “Lou’s cap: Innocent victim of M’s season”). So are the fans who have to endure his childish tirades on the field. Then we must endure it all again in the guffawing media. Lou Piniella needs to get with the program! This is not the 70s or 80s. Billy Martin and Earl Weaver are long gone. Other managers in the league somehow manage to contain their anger, so why can’t Lou?
And then we wonder why a few games later the father and son duo attacked the Kansas City Royals first base coach. The media (i.e., TV news and Larry Henry) seem to relish Lou’s tirades and report it with endorsement and humor. But when there are reports of fans getting into the act, it suddenly is all wrong. Well, the boys of summer must realize they help to instigate it. Lou and Larry – get a clue. Where are the role models these days?
