Media gave James Comey a free pass

The June 9 Herald front page headline in bold letters quoting former FBI director James Comey: “Lies, plain and simple” shows how biased the media is.

The last time I recall anyone publicly calling the president of the United States a liar on national TV was in 2009 when Congressman Joe Williams called President Obama a liar during his speech about the Affordable Care Act. The reaction of the press to this incident was completely opposite to what has occurred regarding Mr. Comey’s accusation. Mr. Comey is being treated as if his opinion that President Trump is a liar is a fact. While Congressman Wilson was castigated for having been disrespectful for stating his opinion that President Obama was a liar. As it turns out, many of the statements made by president Obama during that speech regarding the Affordable Care Act were in fact lies. Remember “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor,” “if you like your plan you can keep your plan” and many other claims including reduction of health care costs.

So why does Mr. Comey get a free pass on his accusation without having to provide proof that President Trump lied. Are we just to take him at his word that there are no problems in the FBI that might have contributed to his firing? Could it be that the media simply does not like President Trump and is willing to pounce on anything that could diminish his ability to lead? Also, if Mr. Comey is so pure, why did he have to go to a third party to reveal (leak) details of his private conversation with President Trump. I am sure someone in the media would have been very happy to talk directly with him.

Sadly, I see this whole congressional hearing as a huge waste of time and money mainly designed as an opportunity for political grandstanding. It seems to me that the committee could have acquired the same testimony by simply deposing Mr. Comey under oath without all the hoopla but then the committee would not have the opportunity to get their faces on TV.

At the very least, the Herald headline should have read Comey’s opinion: “Lies, plain and simple.”
