I am a longtime resident of Everett. One of the reasons I’ve been very proud of being a part of this community is the care we show our children through supporting public schools. As president of the Snohomish County branch of the NAACP, I can say with certainty that our mission for education is to ensure that all students have access to an equal and high-quality public education. Everett Public Schools is a well-run district and has taken commendable steps to make sure they meet the needs of every child, including children from all socio-economic backgrounds.
It’s hard to deny the success of Everett Public Schools when student achievement is documented and graduation rates are continually improving. We all know that it is important that students have safe and well maintained buildings, that classrooms aren’t over crowded, and our educators are competent. The strength of a community is rooted in its educational system, starting with K-12. It is the generation being educated today that will provide future skilled workers, business owners, professionals, and hopefully teachers.
From my perspective, I don’t believe that we as a community would intentionally not support the Everett Public Schools capital bond that is essential to our children’s education and ultimately our community. I readily admit that my vote didn’t make it in last time because I was out of town on business travel and asked someone else to drop my ballot for me; she forgot. We all make mistakes, but that won’t happen again because this time I will post my own ballot. There are probably many others whose votes weren’t cast for a variety of reasons. Let’s change that.
Please join me in voting yes for the Everett Public Schools capital bond. This is a non-partisan vote to support our children, who we hold above political skirmishes. Our young people deserve the best that we can give them; excellent teachers, pleasant environments conducive to learning, and most of all our support.
