Opposition to a mental health treatment center in rural Stanwood astounds me (“Neighbors, advocates at odds over mental health center near Stanwood,” The Herald, Oct. 16). Our state is in critical need of mental health services. Our area is in critical need of mental health services. I’m not impressed at all that elected officials such as Stanwood Mayor Sid Roberts, state Rep. Greg Gilday and County Council Member Nate Nehring seem to have sided with NIMBY residents instead of the community at large.
I suspect all of those in opposition to this are also distressed by dysfunctional homeless mentally challenged people on the streets of our cities and towns.
What better place than that proposed? It’s perfectly situated for a safe, secure facility and is far preferable to another vast housing development and associated traffic. I live in the area, drive that way frequently and cannot imagine what these people are thinking. I sincerely hope that this much- needed project will go forward as planned.
