Regarding the Oct. 13 article, “You may soon have to pay to park in Everett”: I think this would be a big mistake. Not only do I think that this would discourage shoppers and customers, but meters create so much more of a negative/less friendly atmosphere. The money isn’t so much the issue. It is how we present our city, and how we want to live here.
The article stated that the problem is downtown workers moving their cars every few hours to avoid fines, taking up all the parking spaces. This particular practice could be made illegal, with a big fine.
One thing that the article mentioned was a scanner, that recorded license plates, times and locations of parked cars. If this scanner could keep track of enough information (or if this information could be downloaded and analyzed), violators could easily be discovered, and that person sent a warning or ticket. This would soon put an end to this practice, freeing up all of these parking places. This would make Everett more pleasant for the rest of us, and more available as well.
