Now that the local political campaigns are in full swing, we wanted to underscore the importance of focusing less on what a candidate says during the campaign and more on what they have done. In the case of Monroe City Councilman Minnick who, the focus should be on his efforts in attempting to weaken our city’s ethics rules over the past few years. Specifically, he has actively sought, at taxpayers’ expense, a change in the rules governing conflicts of interest that would permit him to vote on a matter involving a zoning change that would otherwise constitute a conflict of interest.
We have voiced our concerns previously about adopting the “lowest common denominator” approach with respect to the city of Monroe ethics code. Councilman Minnick has been an ardent supporter of efforts to weaken the existing Monroe ethics code, which have been well-documented in the local media.
Given the many challenges facing Monroe, we have a right to expect that all members of our City Council will carry out their duties consistent with the highest level of ethical standards.
Given these concerns, we would encourage all voters to consider these factors in the upcoming election. From our perspective, such factors warrant voting for Margie Rodriguez.
